Forklift Winches - A winch is a mechanical device which specializes in pulling in or winding up or letting out or winding out the tension of a cable, wire rope, rope or a wire cable. It its most simple form it is constructed of a spool with an attached hand crank. More complicated winches are found at the heart of machines like tow trucks, elevators and steam shovels. Sometimes the spool can be known as the winch drum. Elaborate designs have gear assemblies which could be powered by electric, pneumatic, internal or hydraulic combustion drives. Some winches can consist of a mechanical brake or a solenoid brake or a pawl and ratchet device to be able to prevent it from unwinding unless the pawl is retracted.
Generally, the rope is stored on the winch. There is similar machinery called a capstan that does not store the rope. In sailing, when a line is trimmed on a sailboat, the crew member operates the winch handle making use of one hand while tailing the other to be able to maintain tension on the turns. Several winches have a cleat or stripper to maintain tension. These designs are called "self-tailing" winches.
Often, winches are utilized offstage as part of the mechanism to move backdrop in big theatrical shows. Lots of times the winches are really embedded in the stage floor and utilized so as to transfer large set pieces on and off stage.
Recently, winches have been fabricated in particular designs for snow and water sports. This new generation of winches is designed so as to pull riders quickly across a body of water or of snow. This could stimulate a riding experience which is usually supplied by a wave runner, boat or a snow mobile.
